Miran Moon — Travel Sketch: Speed and Impact

In this workshop, Miran Moon will demonstrate how to capture the essence of subjects with style and impact in a limited time. During her extensive travel, Miran has had to adapt her technique to quickly illustrate the dynamic surroundings and the rapidly disappearing subject matters. There are times when we just don’t have two or three hours to finish a sketch, but the subject is so interesting that you do not want to miss the opportunity to capture that special place in time… or sometimes we just want to do a quick sketch while having dinner with non-sketchers. We will practice how to bring fun and interesting flair to our sketches in only short periods of time.

  • Selection of interesting subjects in any surroundings.
  • Capturing the main essence of the subject in limited time by differentiation and selective focus.
  • Practice capturing viewers’ interest by planning visual paths within compositions.
  • How to accentuate depth using the visual path and shadows.
  • Practice fast lines with more confidence and create focal points for visual impact.
  • Practice finalizing a sketch with flair.

I had a wonderful time in Miran’s class. She is a generous and thoughtful instructor, and I learned so much from her fast line sketching exercises: always warm up using inexpensive paper, practice “dancing” with your lines, and the importance of keeping a small sketchbook with you at all times.

Her insights on designing dynamic and compelling compositions were also very helpful. Learning how a few carefully-placed thick or thin lines + white gouache on toned paper to create instant impact without overworking was a key takeaway.

I also appreciated her great tips on traveling light using a limited palette, carrying minimal supplies, and a making her own lightweight accordion fold sketchbook. Brilliant solutions.

Thank you for a very encouraging, enlightening, and inspiring session, Miran!
